Support Systems

Why having a support system so important

Support from friends, family, and your fellow surgery recovery warriors can help you navigate even the heaviest of days. Behind every strong person is an even stronger support system. This doesn’t mean you can’t face surgery and recovery on your own—you absolutely can. But with the right support, the journey often feels smoother, with fewer bumps along the road.

You don’t always have to be brave. Let that sink in. It’s okay to feel scared, doubtful, or uneasy. Those are feelings, not your identity. With the right support, you’ll find it easier to push through those moments of uncertainty.

Sometimes, people want to help but don’t know how. That’s why it’s important to communicate your needs. Whether it’s preparing meals, doing laundry, or helping with child or pet care: ask your loved ones for assistance. Most of the time, they’ll be eager to support you but may need a little guidance. And remember, this process can be tough on them too, as seeing loved ones in pain is not easy. A little empathy and open communication go a long way.

A Personal Note
When I’ve had surgeries in the past, it’s the little moments with my loved ones that brought me the greatest comfort. My mom (the GOAT) would sit with me every evening, talking about anything and everything, and it meant the world to me. She would sit there with me hours on end watching re-runs of Gilmore Girls because she knew that’s all I needed. If you live far from family or friends, even a quick phone call, group text, or FaceTime session can brighten your day.

Your support system doesn’t have to look traditional, either! Maybe your friends are your family, or maybe you’ve found support in online communities. There are incredible Facebook groups, local resources, Reddit threads, and other outlets where you can connect with people who truly understand what you’re going through. The digital age makes it easier than ever to find your tribe even if it just takes a bit of creativity.

Final Thoughts
Remember: you are strong. And even the strongest people need support. Lean on your people. Seek out others who understand your journey. Together, you can face the challenges and find brighter days ahead.
